PROJECT TITLE:

HYBRID STRUCTURES CONSISTING OF A MATRIX OF AIIBVI SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM-WIRES AND ORGANIC SEMICONDUCTOR FILMS FOR APPLICATOINS TO OPTOELECTRONIC DEVICES

Acronym: MATNANORG

Project number: CEX D11-43/2005

ABSTRACT

There is an increasing interest in last few years in hybrid structures consisting of a nanostructured inorganic semiconductor matrix/thin film of organic semiconductor, as potential candidates for optoelectronic or solar energy conversion applications. One of the best known examples is cell developed by Grätzel [2], which consist of a porous nanostructured TiO2 film with an organic dye adsorbed on it.
Based on a good expertise of the workgroup in preparation and physical (structural, electrical, optical) investigation of both AIIBVI materials, and organic semiconductors, the proposal envisages the preparation and a complex investigation of physical properties of structures consisting of ZnO, CdS, CdTe nano-wire matrices and their photo-sensitization with some organic dyes (CuPc, MgPc, TPyP). The nano-wire matrix is obtained by an electrochemical template replication method. It consists of filling a nanoporous membrane with a material of choice, resulting in large arrays of wires with uniform diameters down to a few nanometers and aspect ratios up to about 1000. Then electrical and optical properties of the structures will be investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. The optical polaron problem in quantum wires made of anisotropic materials will be addressed, as well as some of its implications on optical/electrical properties of the hybrid structure. Electrical and photoelectric properties of the inorganic/organic structures will be investigated.

OBJECTIVES

       1. To improve the electrochemical template replication method for growing a matrix of AIIBVI (CdS, CdTe, ZnO) semiconductor quantum wires. To identify optimal control parameters of the method for obtaining good chemical and structural quality of the structures.
       2. To develop a model for in quantum wires made of anisotropic semiconductors. To understand the effect of electron-phonon interaction in such structures on their electrical and optical properties; to analyze its implications on designing of nanostructures with specific electronic and/or optical functionality.
       3. To investigate experimentally structural, electrical and optical properties of the nano-wires structure.
       4. To investigate the photo-sensitization effect of metallic complexes of phthalocyanines and porphyrins deposited on the nano-wires AIIBVI matrix.
