Main scientific research directions

The MDEO Research & Development Center was established based on the research activity and expertise of the members of the Department of Electricity, Solid-State Physics and Biophysics within the Faculty of Physics at the University of Bucharest. It forms the foundation for the development of strong scientific research directions, both fundamental and applied, consistently reflected in publications in peer-reviewed journals (the list can be consulted HERE).

Active directions of fundamental and applied research:

Thin Films

Materials Science and Engineering

Preparation and advanced characterization of semiconducting thin films and multilayer structures. Particular emphasis is placed on optimizing their physical properties and investigating charge transport mechanisms for applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Nanostructures

Functional Nanostructures

Synthesis and characterization of nanostructures and low-dimensional systems. Research activities focus on specific fabrication methods, modeling of growth and self-organization processes, as well as the analysis of electronic transport mechanisms, with the ultimate goal of integrating them into modern devices.

Defects

Deffects in Semiconductors

Deffects analysis in semiconductors using methods based on electrical characterization at different temperatures, complemented by ab initio computations for investigating the electronic band structure. Particular emphasis is placed on studies of band structure reconfiguration in complex materials, targeting a broad range of applications.

Solar Cells

Photovoltaic Devices

Fabrication and characterization of photovoltaic cells based on organic and inorganic materials. Research activities encompass 2nd generation solar cells based on AII-BVI compounds for terrestrial and space applications, as well as 3rd and 4th generation devices employing multilayered architectures and bulk heterojunction systems.

Biophysics

Biophysics and Biomolecular Processes

Experimental methods in biophysics and biomolecular physics, together with the investigation of transport mechanisms across biological membranes. Both advanced physical characterization techniques and computational simulations are employed for the modeling and analysis of biological processes and quantities.
