Infrastructure of the Research & Development Center for Materials and Electronic & Optoelectronic Devices (MDEO)
The MDEO Center’s research infrastructure is modern and tailored to current requirements for the synthesis and characterization of advanced materials and nanostructures based on inorganic, organic, and hybrid organic-inorganic compounds. It supports both fundamental research studies and the integration of these materials into a wide range of electronic and optoelectronic devices with enhanced performance and/or innovative functionalities. The activities carried out within the center require highly qualified personnel as well as dedicated infrastructure capable of ensuring scientifically relevant and internationally competitive results, in line with the MDEO Center’s research directions. In addition, the MDEO Center benefits from complementary access to the facilities and research infrastructure available within the research institutes located on the Măgurele scientific platform.
Further details regarding the MDEO infrastructure, including the services provided, available equipment and their technical specifications, as well as information on researchers specialized in the operation of the instrumentation, can be accessed through the dedicated platforms EERIS ("Engage in the European Research Infrastructure System") and EERTIS ("Engage in the European Research and Technology Infrastructures System").
The research infrastructure available within the MDEO Research & Development Center is organized into specialized facilities and laboratories, briefly presented below. For further information, we invite you to visit the dedicated page of each laboratory.
LAB 01. Thin Films Preparation and Thermal Processing
Preparation and thermal treatment of thin and ultra-thin films based on conductive, semiconducting, or dielectric materials, both organic and inorganic. The films can be deposited onto a variety of substrates, including silicon, glass and plastics, depending on the intended application. The laboratory also enables the fabrication of multilayered thin-film architectures.
Main Equipment:
- Three thermal vacuum evaporation (TVE) systems, dedicated to different classes of materials
- A Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) system equipped with 3 distinct deposition sources
- A spin-coating system for the deposition of thin organic and polymeric films
- Thermal treatment facilities enabling annealing and processing under controlled atmospheres
LAB 02. Nanotechnologies and Electrochemical Processes
Preparation of nanomaterials under strictly controlled ambiental conditions. Various 3D-, 2D-, or 1D-confined nanostructures can be synthesized through chemical or electrochemical processes, either assisted or not by nanoporous templates. These nanostructures may be based on metals, as well as organic, inorganic, or hybrid compounds. In addition, nanoporous oxide materials with tunable morphology and structural characteristics can be fabricated.
Main Equipment:
- An ISO 4 "box-in-box"-type modular CleanRoom
- A 3-arm "glove box" for operation under an inert atmosphere
- Two modular electrochemical workstations for advanced electrochemistry
- An ultrapure water production system
LAB 03. Morphological and Structural Characterizations
Investigation of the morphology and structural characteristics of advanced materials. The available equipment enables detailed characterization of surfaces, interfaces, and nanostructures using modern microscopy and diffraction techniques, contributing to a deeper understanding of structure-property relationships and to the performance optimization of the investigated materials and devices.
Main Equipment:
- A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with nanolithography module (EBL)
- A multi-functional Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
- An X-ray diffractometer (XRD) with reflectometry capability (XRR)
LAB 04. Advanced Optical Spectroscopy
Characterization of the optical properties of advanced materials, nanomaterials, thin films and optoelectronic devices. The available infrastructure enables absorbance, transmittance, reflectance and wettability measurements, as well as the determination of optical and surface-related parameters of the investigated materials.
Main Equipment:
- Two PerkinElmer spectrofotometers
- A contact angle goniometer
LAB 05. Synthesis and Characterization of Biohybrid Materials
Development and investigation of biohybrid materials resulting from the integration of biological components with inorganic, organic or nanostructured materials. The available infrastructure enables the synthesis, processing, as well as optical, spectroscopic and functional characterization of these complex systems, supporting applications in areas such as biosensors, medicine, organic electronics, optoelectronics and environmental technologies.
Main Equipment:
- Two chemical fume hoods (including one biological safety cabinet)
- One forced-air convection incubator
- One refrigerated centrifuge and one nitrogen evaporation concentrator
- Two spectrophotometers covering the UV-Vis-NIR-IR spectral range and one spectrofluorometer
- One fluorescence optical microscope
LAB 06. Photo-/Electrical and Magnetic Characterizations
Investigation of electrical, photoelectrical and magnetic properties of advanced materials, nanomaterials and electronic & optoelectronic devices. The available infrastructure enables electrical and magnetic measurements (Hall effect), under both static and dynamic conditions, the response evaluation under controlled illumination, as well as the determination of key functional parameters relevant to sensors, photodetectors and other energy conversion applications.
Main Equipment:
- Two recirculating liquid-Helium cryostats, one of which is equipped with a high-field electromagnet
- A solar simulator integrated with a complete photovoltaic cell characterization platform
LAB 07. MDEO Computing Center
Computing cluster for modeling and simulation of the electronic structure of materials, nanostructures and quantum devices. The infrastructure enables advanced computational studies, contributing to a deeper understanding of the electronic, optical, and charge transport properties of the investigated materials. The system is employed for the design and optimization of next-generation materials and devices, with applications in electronics, optoelectronics and quantum technologies.
