Presentation of the MDEO Research & Development Center
The Research & Development Center for Materials and Electronic & Optoelectronic Devices (MDEO) was established in 2006 within the Faculty of Physics of the University of Bucharest, by Rector's Decision No. 376/28.02.2006, following the approval and funding of the "Interdisciplinary Platform for the Master's Program in Nanosciences" (Contract No. 33/2006, Romanian Government). Since its establishment, the MDEO Center has provided a dedicated framework for both advanced scientific research and research-based education, supporting academic and research activities in the fields of physics and biophysics, materials science and engineering, nanostructures, electronic and optoelectronic devices. Today, the MDEO Center benefits from a modern research infrastructure designed to support the implementation of research projects, as well as educational and training activities at the Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, and Postdoctoral levels, with a strong focus on these interdisciplinary research areas. At the same time, the center's academic and research staff possesses extensive expertise in semiconductor physics, thin films for electronic and optoelectronic applications, nanotechnologies for the synthesis of advanced nanomaterials, electrical and photoelectrical characterization of organic and inorganic thin-film photovoltaic cells, field-effect transistors, sensors and biosensors development, computational modeling, advanced numerical methods for data analysis and simulation.
1. Description of MDEO Center Activities
The MDEO Research & Development Center is an independent structure under the direct direct subordination of the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest, with its activities oriented toward both fundamental and applied scientific research, as well as the training and advanced education of human resources for research and higher education.
The activities of the MDEO Center, carried out on a self-financing basis, contribute to the development and implementation of modern standards aligned with international best practices in the field of methods for the fabrication and characterization of thin films based on organic and inorganic semiconductors, as well as in the realization of electronic (diodes, field-effect transistors, etc.) and optoelectronic (photodiodes, photovoltaic cells, light-emitting diodes, etc.) devices. In addition to its fundamental and applied research activities, the MDEO Center actively contributes to the education and training of young researchers in areas such as Condensed Matter Physics, Semiconductor Physics, as well as Micro- and Nanoelectronics, providing the necessary infrastructure and scientific framework for the development of bachelor’s and master’s theses, as well as doctoral dissertations.
Access for Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students to the facilities and infrastructure of the Research & Development Center for Materials and Electronic & Optoelectronic Devices (MDEO) within the Faculty of Physics at the University of Bucharest is granted in accordance with the procedure described HERE.
2. Organization of the MDEO Research & Development Center
From an organizational perspective, the MDEO Research & Development Center is structured into five functional branches, with a variable number of positions, as follows:
Management Branch:
1 position - General Director
1 position - Executive Director
1 position - Administrative role
Research & Development Branch

Coordination of Activities
The MDEO Center is managed by the General Director, together with an Administration Board composed of four members, representing the coordinators of the Center’s branches. Since the establishment of the Center, the position of General Director has been held by Prof. Emeritus PhD Ștefan ANTOHE, appointed through Decision No. 1076/14.06.2006 of the Rector of the University of Bucharest. Each branch of the Center is coordinated by a person appointed by the General Director. The Administration Board meets periodically, either at the initiative of the General Director, or upon the request of at least two of its members.
Management and Administrative Positions
General Director of the Center: S.R. I, or equivalent Professor
Executive Director of the Center: S.R. II / S.R. I, or equivalent Associate Professor / Professor
Coordinators of Branches: S.R. III / S.R. II / S.R. I, or equivalent Lecturer / Associate Professor / Professor
Executive Positions
Researchers: S.R. / S.R. III / S.R. II / S.R. I, or equivalent Assistant / Lecturer / Associate Professor / Professor
Researchers without PhD Degree: R. A., or equivalent PhD Students
Students: Bachelor, Master
Asset Administrator: Economist, or equivalent
Approximately 50% of the total staff of the MDEO Center will consist of academic teaching staff, who will hold a part-time research position (equivalent to half-time or full-time through cumulative employment), while the remaining personnel will consist of individuals whose primary employment is in research.
Currently, the MDEO Center has 13 members, all holding higher education degrees, including two members with managerial responsibilities and one member in charge of administrative activities. In addition, the center’s activity is supported by numerous collaborators from Romania and abroad, contributing to the development of research projects and the strengthening of international scientific cooperation. The full composition of the MDEO team can be consulted on the dedicated web page.
Responsibilities of the Branches
Research & Development Branch
Conducts fundamental research activities in the field of organic and inorganic semiconductor physics. The obtained results are disseminated through publications in specialized scientific journals and serve as a basis for the subsequent development of applied research activities.
Develops innovative methods and technologies for the fabrication and characterization of new semiconductor materials with specific properties, with potential for the realization of high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices. These activities are carried out within scientific collaboration contracts established following the identification of relevant research problems and directions of interest.
Designs, fabricates, and tests electronic and optoelectronic devices, while also pursuing technology transfer to stakeholders from the electronics industry and the energy sector, interested in the development and implementation of solutions based on alternative and unconventional energy sources.
Training and Professional Development Branch
Provides the necessary framework and conditions for the preparation of doctoral theses and postdoctoral specialization works in related fields such as "Materials Science and Engineering", as well as "Organic and Inorganic Semiconductor Physics".
Facilitates the development of new practical laboratory works for postgraduate courses, with direct relevance to the field of semiconductor materials physics.
Ensures the appropriate conditions for the continuous professional development of specialists from research institutes, as well as of those working in other sectors related to the physics and technology of semiconductor materials.
Database, Simulation and Methods for Automated Analysis Branch
