Research & Development Center for Materials and Electronic & Optoelectronic Devices (MDEO)

The mission of MDEO Center

MDEO’s mission is to advance fundamental and applied research in the field of advanced materials, electronics and optoelectronics by promoting scientific excellence, technological innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Center’s activity is focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel semiconductor materials, the development of high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices, as well as the integration of research results into applications relevant to society and industry.

Key pillars of the Center’s mission

MDEO promotes an integrated model of education, alongside fundamental and applied research, aimed at training motivated and initiative-driven specialists capable of transforming scientific results into solutions relevant to society and the economic environment. In this regard, MDEO’s mission is guided by three main approaches:

1. Education and training through research

The educational and professional training process is supported by hands-on research activities, fostering the development of competencies through direct application, experimentation, and practical engagement, going beyond the mere transfer of theoretical knowledge specific to the field.

2. Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programmes

Training a new generation of early-career researchers, characterized by creativity, an innovative spirit, and initiative, capable of addressing current and future challenges, as well as of leveraging knowledge and ideas by transforming them into products and services relevant to society and the economic environment.

3. Development of transversal skills

Expanding traditional academic training through the development of technical and transferable skills adapted to current research requirements. This approach contributes to the diversification of career opportunities both within and outside academia, through international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral mobility, as well as openess to diverse professional environments.

Fundamental strategic directions

From harnessing solar energy as an alternative energy source of the future, to the development of an adequate research infrastructure and the training of specialists in the field, these four strategic principles guide the research agenda and partnerships of the MDEO Center:

1. Solar energy as an alternative energy source

Most of the energy on Earth originates from the Sun. Solar radiation, through its interaction with matter, represents the foundation of all processes occurring on Earth. As more efficient energy conversion systems are developed to harness usable energy, we contribute to improving the quality of everyday life and increasing energy independence.

2. Multidisciplinary convergence

The scientific research carried out within the MDEO Center has a strong multidisciplinary character, positioned at the intersection of physics and biophysics, chemistry and electrochemistry, nanotechnologies, and materials science and engineering. This approach significantly fosters interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration, both at national and international levels.

3. Accessible research resources and infrastructure

The open research infrastructure of the MDEO Center is designed to facilitate access to advanced materials preparation and characterization equipment and technologies for both researchers and students across different levels of study (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral). It supports scientific collaboration and knowledge transfer by providing technical assistance and expertise for the development of both fundamental and applied research projects. Through its openness to the academic and economic environments, the infrastructure contributes to strengthening a dynamic and competitive research ecosystem at national and international levels.

4. Micro- and nanofabrication technologies in conventional processes

Micro- and nanofabrication technologies play an essential role in the modernization of conventional processes, enabling precise control over material properties and structures at the microscale and nanoscale. By integrating these technologies into traditional manufacturing processes for electronic and optoelectronic devices, improved performance and new functionalities can be achieved. This approach primarily supports the expansion of application areas for advanced materials.

Solid principles guiding the activity of the MDEO Center

  • Scientific and research excellence
  • Academic integrity
  • Interdisciplinary approach
  • Active institutional collaboration
  • Openness to education, innovation, and society

Overall, the MDEO Research & Development Center consolidates its mission by promoting fundamental and applied research in the fields of advanced materials, electronics, and optoelectronics, supported by scientific excellence, technological innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through its activities, the Center focuses on the synthesis and characterization of novel semiconductor materials, the development of high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices, as well as the transfer of research results into applications relevant to society and industry. At the same time, the Center contributes to addressing key objectives of the current context, such as increasing research efficiency, strengthening the link between higher education, research, and the economic environment, particularly in areas with direct practical applicability, as well as fostering international cooperation with a view to integration into the European Research and Education Area. Research and collaboration activities are also carried out through the Department of Electricity, Solid-State Physics and Biophysics of the Faculty of Physics, thereby contributing to the development of interdisciplinary research and innovation directions.
