Topic:Study of new binary and ternary organic compounds for applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices
Domain:Physics
Direction:Physics of Condensed Matter
Language:Romanian, English

Topic description:
Lately, great progress has been made both in terms of conversion efficiency (sometimes exceeding 20% [1]) and in terms of the stability of organic solar cells (OSCs), belonging to the third generation of solar cells, and if we refer to Perovskite-based structures (PSCs) they have exceeded the efficiency of 25% [2]. Taking into account the expertise of the research group and infrastructure from the Research & Development Center for Materials and Electronic and Optoelectronic Devices (MDEO) [3-5], the general objective of the proposed theme will be to test new ternary compounds of the "two in one" type: two donors with a non-fullerene acceptor (D1, D2, A) or a donor with two non-fullerene acceptors (D,  A1, A2) in photovoltaic cell structures with a single absorber layer.

Topic:Interfacial Instability Induced by Liquid Droplets Interactions
Domain:Physics
Direction:Physics of Condensed Matter
Language:Romanian, English

Topic description:
Abstract: Optofluidic systems may be effectively used to investigate in detail the morphological transitions of droplet interfaces caused by complex phenomena such as evaporation, the presence of vapor gradients around the droplets, capillary forces at the liquid-gas interface, and Marangoni effects due to surface tension gradients. The combined influence of these phenomena results in long-range interactions between droplets, leading to surface instabilities. In fluid dynamics, droplets interaction can result in merging or bouncing. Therefore, controlling instabilities during the pre-contact phase of droplet interfaces is crucial for a deeper phenomenological understanding of these interactions.
Research Aims: The aim of this doctoral grant to advance the phenomenological understanding of both direct and long-range interactions between droplets by conducting a comprehensive analysis of capillary interactions at fluid interfaces. Even without direct contact, droplets are subjected attractive or repulsive forces [1], depending on their surface tension properties. These forces arise from capillary interactions by the vapor surrounding the droplets, leading to oscillations on their surfaces. The structural modifications of the droplets will be used to achieve controlled displacement, enabling selective droplet interactions for potential medical applications. To neglect gravitational effects and focus on capillary interactions, the behavior of droplets in microchannels are followed [2] using laser-liquid interactions for droplet control [3] obtaining stable emulsions for drug delivery applications [4]. Optical techniques such as interferometry and shadowgraphy [5,6] are used to analyze morphological transitions and long-range interactions through advanced image analysis, using computational codes developed in MATLAB and Python.

Topic:Study and development of hybrid techniques for tiled-aperture coherent beam combination of high-power ultrashort laser pulses
Domain:Physics
Direction:Physics of Condensed Matter
Language:Romanian, English

Topic description:
Coherent beam combination (CBC) in a parallel (tiled-aperture) configuration is an essential technique to achieve ultra-high intensities for low-repetition-rate, petawatt-class femtosecond laser pulses. This approach helps overcome fundamental limitations in high-power chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) systems, including undesirable nonlinear effects (specifically self-focusing and wavefront distortion). It also overcomes the constraints imposed by the damage thresholds of optical components in the CPA chain and the limits of the available size of the optical components. Despite these advantages, CBC faces significant challenges. In free-space high-power pulsed laser systems, pump-source perturbations, air flow, thermal distortions, and environmental vibrations necessitate high-precision, real-time correction of phase errors (including piston errors) and precise alignment of the pulses’ temporal envelopes.
The proposed doctoral research aims to address these challenges by employing interferometric detection methods [1,2] of phase errors, along with active control methods [3] for real-time phase correction. Different interferometric methods, capable of ensuring the timing jitter compensation in the range of 100 as accuracy, based on the generation of quadrature electrical signals generation [1,2] or on Hansch-Couillaud type detection systems [3], will be studied comparatively. To overcome the difficulties of an active feedback control caused by the low repetition rate of high-power fs-lasers compared to the frequencies of phase fluctuations, a continuous wave laser will be used as reference light for phase error measurement by interferometric methods [4].
Additionally, nonlinear optical cross-correlation methods, based on sum-frequency generation in nonlinear crystals [5,6], will be studied to ensure an automatic control of both spatial and temporal overlap of the pulses, compensating for timing jitter of their temporal envelopes with femtosecond accuracy.
By combining these methods, a highly efficient, distortion-free beam combination could be obtained. As a result, a hybrid technique will be developed for the CBC of high-power femtosecond laser pulses.

Topic:Electrochemically-synthesized nanostructured thin films for electronics and optoelectronics
Domain:Physics
Direction:Physics of Condensed Matter
Language:Romanian, English

Topic description:
Direct conversion of solar energy into electricity through photovoltaic effect represents a viable alternative for new energy sources. In this sense, there is a permanent interest for increasing the conversion efficiency of the solar cells, despite their type and generation, while decreasing their fabrication costs. One option in this regard is to exploit the advantages of modern nanotechnologies that can bring additional performance or new functionalities to electronic and optoelectronic devices.
For this purpose, a modular experimental platform for implementing cost-effective electrochemical processes has been developed in recent years within Research & Development Center for Materials and Electronic & Optoelectronic Devices (MDEO), from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Bucharest. The potential of this experimental configuration has been already demonstrated for the electrochemical synthesis of Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) thin films, but also for the growth of ordered arrays of nanowires or nanotubes vertically-oriented in respect to the substrate, targeting various applications [1-3].
In these circumstances, the general objective of this doctoral program is based on the implementation of electrochemical processes for the preparation of nanostructured thin films, with applicability within optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells or photo-detectors. In particular, the optimization of electrochemical synthesis procedures of Cadmium (Cd) - free chalcogen-based compounds will be considered, for which the MDEO Center has the necessary scientific expertise and infrastructure [4-6].
Taking thus into account the expertise developed in recent years within MDEO Center, the experience of the research group, but also the available research infrastructure, the premises for the successful achievement of the proposed objectives are ensured.

Topic:Development of smartly-engineered nanowire-based substrates for sensing applications
Domain:Physics
Direction:Physics of Condensed Matter
Language:Romanian, English

Topic description:
Development of large arrays of nanowires and nanotubes of different geometries and with modulated compositions, triggered new prospects from the practical point of view, mainly because these types of nanostructures with axial symmetry in conjunction with diverse organic or inorganic materials form nanocomposite films with special mechanical, thermal, optical, and electrical properties. As demonstrated so far, the applicative range of such nanowires can span from electrodes for micro-batteries and microsupercapacitors [1,2], to thermoelectricity [3,4], as well as more frequently to capacitive or chemiresistive sensing and biosensing devices [5,6]. For the latter category, these nanostructures uniquely provide very large surface-to-volume ratios, an extremely important property that allows preparation of detectors with immense active surfaces and reduced physical dimensions.
In this context, this PhD Research Program is based on the fabrication and characterization of such large arrays and patterns of quasi one-dimensional nanostructures made-up of metals and other organic or inorganic compounds, targeting their integration within sensors and biosensors with superior performance, especially in terms of sensitivity and limit-of-detection. The framework program will be mainly carried out within Research & Development Center for Materials and Electronic & Optoelectronic Devices (MDEO), as part of the Faculty of Physics of the University of Bucharest. In relation to this research work, a versatile electrochemical synthesis platform is available for nanowires and nanotubes fabrication by template-free or template-assisted electrochemical means. Also, experimental settlements are available for sensors and biosensors’ characterization, including a modern electrochemical-quartz crystal microbalance (E-QCM) setup for mass-sensitive in-situ measurements. This system is an essential tool to deeply investigate the dynamic response of reactions at electrode-liquid interfaces, helping thus in the optimization process of various sensing and biosensing scenarios.
Considering the expertise developed at MDEO in the last years and the experience of the PhD supervisor, as well as the available research infrastructure, the successful accomplishment of the objectives proposed in this doctoral program is guaranteed.

Topic:Eco-strategies for the development of biomaterials containing natural or synthetic platforms (derived from plants or insects) and phyto-derived particles, for biomedical or environmental applications
Domain:Physics
Direction:Experimental and Computational Biophysics, Medical Physics
Language:Romanian, English

Topic description:
This topic aims to design innovative materials by adopting eco-friendly strategies (bioinspiration, biomimetics, and self-assembly), and by using natural resources: biocompounds, natural biomaterials (such as vegetal tissues, spider silk), and recycling food and vegetal waste. Vegetal waste will be used for the nanogeneration of metallic/multi-metallic nanoparticles which will be deposed on various natural or synthetic materials for biomedical or environmental applications. As known, plants represent a rich source of natural bioactive compounds with high therapeutic potential (such as antimicrobial and antioxidant).
